The Australasian Hebrew (October 9, 1896)
From Roumania.
More Judaico : The Minister of Justice has ordered the authorities of Jassy to send in reports why the Jews are still obliged to take the oath mere Judaico, viz., in white shrouds and before the open arc, as the cases are increasing where Jews object to be submitted to such procedure. In other parts of the kingdom this form of oath has long been abolished and it is the more remarkable that in Jassy the ancient custom is rigorously adhered to, as the civil code and the legal procedure are one and the same for the whole country. It is stated that this different treatment of Jews and Christians before the law-courts is looked upon with great displeasure at the Royal Court.
Obituary : Dr. Bernhard Taussig, one of the Chief Physicians in Jassy, died there on the 7th of last month. His reputation as a doctor extended far beyond the frontiers of Roumania, but in Jassy itself he enjoyed general esteem for his philanthropy. Fully 15,000 of his co-religionists followed his remains to their last resting place.
